The Khomas Basketball League will go on a break following the conclusion of Game Weeks nine and 10, with the University of Namibia (Unam) Wolves continuing their dominance in the Men’s Premier League.
In the Woman’s Premier League, Unam Sparks and Unam Phoenix are fighting it neck and neck at the halfway stage of the tournament, while the Mens First Division has thrown out unpredictable results so far this season.
In the same women’s league, close rivals Sparks and Phoenix are on 14 points apiece, with Sparks leading the log via a superior baskets difference. Both teams have dropped points this season as Sparks forfeited one match, while Phoenix lost to the log leaders.
Coming to the Men’s Premier League, Wolves lead the pack with 18 points ahead of Afro Stars, who have so far amassed 15 points while defending champions Titans are third with 14 points.
Unam Rebels are fourth, followed by Nust Blues in fifth and Titans Legends anchoring the log.
Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) president Helena Uugwanga said this season was exciting and unpredictable.
“We have seen some strong performances, especially in the Men’s First Division, while in the Premier League, Wolves have continued with their dominance, but Stars and Titans are hot on their heels. There is a possibility of an upset this season,” she said.
She added the league continues to face challenges in the form of venues and sponsorship.
“We are currently using Unam and DHPS facilities for our matches. Unam also plays host to the Central Volleyball Association games, while once exams start, we struggle to play our games, as these are the only two institutions that have up-to-standard facilities. The UN Plaza has a lot of logistics involved especially security-wise,” she explained.
Uugwanga said although they want to take basketball to the people, UN Plaza is expensive, since they will have to provide their security, while she noted that the quality of the hoops at the venue was not of standard.
The KBA season is expected to resume either on the 9th or 16th of June, depending on the availability of the venues.
Uugwanga also stated that during the second half of the season, the teams will participate in the Heroes Cup, whose finals will take place on the 26th of August. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
