The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) will host its third senior tennis tournament for the year from Friday to Sunday at the Central Tennis Club (CTC).
NTA chairperson for junior tennis Santie van der Walt said they hope to see an increase in participants ove r the weekend.
“ T h e due date is tonight (yesterday), and we have so far received about 21 entries in all categories. We are expecting to have over 100 participants, since it is becoming more popular amongst senior players,” she said.
Van der Walt added the competition is crucial for players who are hoping to book their spots at the upcoming Davis Cup, slated for Au g u s t this year.
“ T h e Davis Cup is one of the most important tournaments on players’ calendars – and everyone wants to compete at the tournament, so this will assist in accumulating points to qualify for the much-anticipated event, slated for August. All players who will make more points will boost their chances of being ranked,” she said.
Meanwhile, tournament director Jandre Bezuidenhout said they expect to have a thrilling tournament, as it will also see international participants.
“It’s a huge tournament, and we expect stiff competition over the weekend. We also have international participants with players from Zambia who have confirmed – and this just shows you how big of a tournament this will be,” he said.
The tournament is open to all players – men and women – 12 years and older.
Entry fees are N$300 for singles and N$150 per person for doubles.
