The United States of America’s First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in Namibia to discuss issues that will empower women and youth.
Efforts to address food insecurity and promotion of shared democratic values are also part of the agenda.
Bidden touched down at the Hosea Kutako International Airport around 14h30 yesterday to much fanfare, with traditional dance troupes, Namibian First Lady Monica Geingos as well as the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah welcoming her before she proceeded to lay a wreath at Heroes’ Acre just outside Windhoek.
She also paid a courtesy visit to President Hage Geingob at State House where she enlighten on her visit to strengthen the United States African partnerships and advance the shared priorities in the region.
Her visit to Namibia and Kenya follows the US-Africa Summit late last year where she hosted a two-day spousal programme.
She is also expected to visit a local non-governmental organisation in Katutura today to highlight the US government’s programmes that support young people, women and families to improve access to economic opportunities and health services.
The US first lady will deliver the keynote remarks at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) on the role of young people in shaping the future and strengthening democracy.
This will be Biden’s sixth visit to Africa, first visit to Namibia, and third visit to Kenya.
