The education ministry has annulled a teaching position at Litamaro Combined School, following an outcry by the Students’ Union of Namibia (SUN), that said the advertisement calling on prospective candidates is discriminatory.
This comes after the Omusati regional education directorate advertised a relief teaching post for English grades four to seven on 11 November 2022, calling only for graduates from the University of Namibia (Unam). It said only Unam candidates would be considered for the said position.
This advert left many unhappy, including SUN, who condemned the recruitment process within the education ministry, saying the practice is discriminatory. “We have heard and read with shock the advertisement post of teaching as released on 11 November 2022 in which applicants were strictly informed that only teachers who have graduated from the University of Namibia are eligible to apply for the relief teaching post,” Patrik Shomagwe who is SUN representative for legal affairs reacted.
Basic education spokesperson Sem Shino yesterday confirmed the advert was cancelled.
“The advert was cancelled and it will be re-advertised,” he said.
The SUN argued that all Namibian graduates irrespective of where they graduated from – whether it is a public or private institution, should be allowed to apply. anakale@nepc.com.na
