What started as a small internship project for the Goethe-Institut by two German foreign exchange film students in 2017, KinoNamibia Film Festival will this year again provide the platform to everyone who would like to express their creativity in the film industry.
Sponsored by the Namibian Film Commission and the United Nations Development Programme, the three-day film festival will run from 26 to 29 August 2022.
The festival is organised as part of an international movement, KinoKabaret, and was held in Namibia for the first time in 2017.
The main goal is to bring together talents out of the media field – professionals and amateurs – that form groups and produce short local stories within 48 hours.
The three-day festival will commence with the participants meeting for the first time on the first day, forming groups, coming up with concepts and filming for two days.
Day three is for participants to edit their videos so that all films are shown at a public screening.
This year, filmmakers, including directors, actors, cameramen, editors, sound designers, musicians and scriptwriters will be challenged to come up with solution-driven films that are themed around seven of the United Nations Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
“The selected goals are poverty, health, quality education, gender equality, innovation, climate change and governance,” said one of the film festival’s organising team members, Melissa Muller (31) or ‘Scarlet Gray’ as she is more commonly known in the music industry.
Taking part in the film festival since 2017, Nahenda Aino Matheus (25), a creative director, fashion stylist and content producer, told VIBEZ! that without initiatives like KinoNamibia offering young filmmakers an opportunity to create films, the Namibian film industry will not move forward.
“KinoNamibia gives up-and-comers the space to learn on the job and use the experience as a stepping stone because it challenges you creatively. It allowed me to write, shoot and even act in a few productions over 48 hours. For many people, it is the first time around film productions. So, in that way, KinoNamibia truly builds careers,” she said. To register for the film festival, participants can purchase tickets for N$20 each.
There are only 150 tickets available.
