OSHAKATI – Governor of Oshana region Elia Irimari said the region is ready to host The Namibian Newspaper Cup between 26 and 29 August this year.
“We are happy to inform you all that Oshana region will host the newspaper cup at the Oshakati Independence stadium,” he said.
The competition will be held under the theme ‘Enhancing a pristine sport environment’.
Irimari informed the gathering that the organising committee commenced with renovations on the sports field, and he is confident that all renovations will be completed before the event.
He stressed that 80% of the renovations on the stadium is complete, with only minor renovations pending on the pavilion, toilets, as well as the two school hostels where the participating teams will be accommodated.
“So far, the local organising committee (LOC) with the Oshakati Town Council is working tirelessly to improve the football pitch at the Oshakati Independence stadium. The LOC also managed to get the old netball court renovated, and managed to build a new netball court,” the governor noted.
Irimari also used the opportunity to call on local businesses to come on board and render the financial assistance needed to complete the outstanding renovations.
He further said local companies will be used to complete the work left, as well as offer services during the duration of the cup.
“It is imperative to note that The Namibian Newspaper Cup brings not only sport in our region, but it is an opportunity for our business community to score from the event. hence, the call for all our economic sectors in our region to prepare and take full advantage of the upcoming event,” the governor said.
In addition, Irimari said the event is also an opportunity for young people to meet and network through sports.
