RUNDU – The Rundu Town Council has set plans in motion for the complete rehabilitation of one of its most important roads, which is in disrepair.
The 2.8km Dr Sam Nujoma Drive starts from Eugene Kakukuru traffic circle linking several schools and residential areas and ends at Maria Mwengere T-junction.
The road will be closed for at least three months to allow for repairs and rehabilitation.
Recently, the Road Fund Administration expressed disappointment in the Rundu Town Council’s failure to use the N$5.5 million allocation in the current financial year to improve the town’s crumbling road infrastructure.
RFA CEO Ali Ipinge, who visited Rundu recently, said he was disappointed that the town only used 30% of the allocated funds.
Ipinge said this was despite the RFA financially committing to support the town council to overhaul its most damaged roads in the town, provided a reputable contractor was appointed to do the job.
The Roads Authority (RA), in conjunction with RFA are now assisting the council with the project design, costing and management.
In a public notice, RTC spokesperson Benjamin Makayi said, “The Rundu Town Council would like to inform the public of a partial road closure of Dr Sam Nujoma drive due to the bad state that necessitated for complete rehabilitation of the 2.8km stretch.
“The public are therefore informed that the said road will be closed for three months months as from 18 February to 20 May to allow for rehabilitation of the road.”
Makayi appealed to regular road users and affected residents to use alternative streets to reach their homes and work places.
“Your support and patience during the construction period of this most important road will be highly appreciated,” he said.
