The police in the Hardap region late yesterday were still searching for the body of one man who went missing when a boat capsized at Lake Oanob near Rehoboth on Saturday afternoon.

According to Hardap crime investigations coordinator Eric Clay, the boat sank while nine people were on board. One is still missing.

Sean Naude of the Namibian Marshall Rangers, a first responder organisation, said one body was retrieved by divers yesterday morning. Two people were also transported to hospital and four managed to swim to safety, according to initial reports.

Naude said the retrieved body is of a 24-year-old man, who was partying on the boat. Another body was found late Sunday afternoon.

Deputy commissioner Clay confirmed the tragedy.

“It is alleged that about nine male Namibian adults went on a boat cruise and enjoyment, but the boat sank. Six people were rescued,” he explained.

The police said the search for the bodies was continuing with the assistance of divers from Nampol and Crisis Response, who are reported to be at the bottom of the lake in search of the one person.

It is reported that some bass fishing boats discovered the submerged boat with fish finder technology.

Contacted for comment, the Lake Oanob management referred all media queries to the police.
