KEETMANSHOOP – The Keetmanshoop Municipality on Wednesday renamed a street in the Tseiblaagte residential area in honour of the captain of Namibia’s senior women’s football team, Zenatha Coleman.

The municipality started renaming streets at the town in March this year, and this was the 10th street to be renamed.

Keetmanshoop mayor McDonald Hanse said the renaming of the streets is a symbolic gesture that ensures that those who have made significant contributions to society are remembered.

“We are here for a historical moment, where we are renaming a street after our hero, who put the footprint of Namibia on the world map of sports. Zenatha was born 30 years ago and raised in the dusty streets of Tseiblaagte. We are honoured to rename this street in her name,” he said.

Coleman said she never dreamt of having a street renamed in her honour.

“This is huge. I think this is the proudest moment for me and my family, and especially my late grandfather. It’s because of him that I am who I am. Thank you so much to the municipality and the community for always supporting me. I hope this an inspiration to the young boys and girls that sports can change your life,” she said.

She currently plays as a winger for Fenerbahçe in Türkiye.

She also played for Sevilla and Valencia in Spain, and is a three-time Caf women’s footballer of the year nominee. -Nampa
