Road safety to be in school curriculum

ONGWEDIVA – To combat road accidents in the country, the education ministry and the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) are working on incorporating road safety into the national school curriculum.

The integration will see road safety being incorporated into several school subjects, as the country works to achieve the vision of reducing road fatalities to zero. The integration was presented by Haroldt //Geiseb from the education ministry at the Ninth Annual Road Safety Conference held in Ongwediva last week.

“Teachers will be trained on how to incorporate road safety into subjects like Natural Science, Mathematics, English, and Geography,” he said.

The rules and regulations of road safety will be merged into different subjects as they suit learners from grade zero to 12.

Bertha Haimbodi, an official from the National Institute for Educational Development (NIED), said their curriculum department is working together with the research department at NRSC to ensure the integrated road safety content will be taught in schools smoothly.
