Ondangwa United and Gerros Uri-Khob Football Academy are in a heated league battle as the Oshikoto Second Division Football League nears its conclusion, with both teams prevailing over the weekend to boost their title and promotion prospects.
Both teams have three games remaining before the league’s completion, with Gerros Uri-Khob having a high goal advantage over their rivals, 24 compared to their opponents’ 20.
On Saturday, Gerros Uri-Khob Academy upset relegation-threatened Omandengu United 2-1 in their pursuit of the league title, before defeating Onathinge United 3-1 on Sunday to put them in contention for the league title. Ondangwa United, who refuse to surrender crucial points, retained their lead with a 3-1 defeat of Young Rangers.
As it stands, the league may go down to the wire, with the last dance scheduled for 28 July 2024. However, Ondangwa United can win the title with two wins and a tie, whereas its opponents must win all their remaining games, and rely on Ondangwa’s mistakes en route to victory.
After 19 games, Ondangwa United leads with 44 points from 13 wins, five draws and one loss, while Gerros Uri-Khob Academy trails with 40 points from 12 wins, four draws and three defeats.
Another league competitor, Mama Love, dropped points during the weekend, narrowing the title fight to the top two teams, with the latter remaining third with 37 points. Mama Love earned three points on Saturday by defeating relegation-threatened Soweto Chiefs 3-0 before losing 1-0 to Nine Eleven on Sunday.
The other Saturday results included an embarrassing defeat of Newcastle United by mid-table Safile United 3-0. Onathinge United forced a draw, 1-all against Young Rangers, while Nine Eleven moved into the top four following a fantastic display in which they hammered Benfica 2-0.
In an all-relegation affair, Omandengu United came out victorious after edging Soweto Chiefs 3-0, while Young United forced a late 3-all draw against Benfica on Sunday.
With some clubs already having played 18, 19, and 20 games, Nine Eleven is fourth with 34 points, Newcastle United (5) has 33, and Benfica (6) and Safile United (7) each have 24.
Onathinge United is safe from relegation with 22 points in eighth place, followed by Young Rangers (9) with 21 points.
The battle for survival is down to three teams, with Young United (10) with 15 points having a good chance of escaping if they win their next game. Omandengu United (11) and Soweto Chiefs (12) are both on 13 points. -Nampa
