Clarisa Chipfupa and Glenville Dantu were crowned winners of round 10 of the 2024 Nedbank for Good Series, held at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club on Saturday.
The event lived up to its expectations, with 99 amateur golfers participating in the tournament.
Of the 99, 11 were women, the biggest number of female participants in the tournament so far.
The defending women’s champion, Chipfupa, scored 41 points to claim victory ahead of Natasja Louw, who scored 37 points for second place, and Jolene van Schoor, who manged 36 points and a third-place finish.
Speaking after the games, Chipfupa said it was a great game, and praised her competitors for inspiring the next generation of female golf players.
“Beginning with a par on the first hole boosted my confidence for the day. There were one or two disappointing holes, but I kept encouraging myself. The team I played with played a big role in motivating me. Being the defending champion also motivated me to do well here,” she said.
Chipfupa, who only started playing golf three years ago after being persuaded by her husband for over three years, urged other women to join her on the course as the sport is not only for men.
“Golf is a game for everyone. I find it so relaxing because my week is very hectic and my life in general is very busy as I am a wife, a mother and a professional. I find my time at the course relaxing. So, I encourage the ladies out there to come and join in on the game,” she said.
Chipfupa said as a person who is passionate about charity, she will prepare well for the finals in Omeya next month.
In the men’s competition, Dantu scored 46 points to claim victory ahead of Clyde Besser, who scored 41 points for second place, and Lucky Ngwenya, who scored 40 points to claim third place.
Dantu said his strategy was to play the shots well, control the course, and play manageable shots.
Speaking about the objectives of the Nedbank for Good series this year, Dantu said: “For me, any benefit you can give to the farmers, especially during the current drought the country is facing, and the fact that I have family members who are farmers as well, makes me try hard to give back to the community. Our company, which also sponsored my team today, tries to assist the farmers in every way possible, including installing solar pumps and solar, as a give-back initiative.”
At the prizegiving, Nedbank Namibia Executive for Wealth Management and Bancassurance Biniam Ghirmatsion pledged the bank’s continued support for the initiative, saying they are proud of the milestones reached by the Nedbank for Good Series recently.
“Over the years, this event has gone from strength to strength as every year, more players have come on board. We are proud to have reached the N$1 million mark, which benefits various charities across Namibia,” Ghirmatsion said.
The proceeds from this year’s series go to Agra ProVision, which aims to train, service and support underserved agricultural communities.
The series finals will be at Omeya on 4 October.
