Head coach of the Brave Warriors Collin Benjamin and his assistant Ronnie Kanalelo are diligently preparing their players for the upcoming 23rd edition of the Cosafa Cup, scheduled to take place in Gqeberha, South Africa from 26 June to 7 July.
During a training session yesterday at the NFA Technical Centre in Windhoek, Benjamin outlined their strategy, emphasising the importance of giving players the opportunity to mix and have good days.
He believes that the most valuable lessons are learned in challenging situations. “I am pleased with the players’ ambition and hunger. Our goal is to improve each individual player so they can contribute effectively to the team. When the team thrives, players can attract attention and secure opportunities abroad,” Benjamin said.
He added that professionalism and consistent high-level training are crucial for players to improve, and achieve personal satisfaction.
Namibia is drawn in Group C of the competition, alongside Angola, Lesotho and Seychelles.
Namibia will face Angola in their first match. “I want to see our principles, hunger and mentality on display. We have a history, but during this rebuilding stage, the focus is on giving players a chance,” Benjamin stated.
Player Bethuel Muzeu expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, stating that everything is in place, and they are ready to kick off. Muzeu, who is lately being compared to Peter Shalulile, shared his excitement about playing alongside him. “I look up to Shalulile. I appreciate the comparisons from fans, and will continue working hard to reach his level,” he said.
He also discussed his commitment to his club Black Leopards, despite interest from other clubs, which wanted to make much small offers to buy him for his football services, expressing faith that his hard work would be rewarded.
Namibia has participated in every Cosafa Cup since its inception in 1997. They have been runners-up three times (1997, 1999 and 2022) and won the competition in 2015, with Deon Hotto scoring twice in the final to secure their first-ever victory.
