Air Connect Namibia welcomes SAA expansion

Air Connect Namibia welcomes SAA expansion

South African Airways (SAA) will commence a third daily frequency connecting Windhoek to Johannesburg from 27 October 2024. This means daily services between Johannesburg ORT (JNB) and Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) commence just before 06h00 with the last flight departing Windhoek just before 18h00.

“Air Connect Namibia welcomes the announcement of an additional third daily frequency between Johannesburg and Windhoek to enhance travel options for travellers, and support the growing demand for air travel in the region.

The new frequency, serviced by SAA’s modern A320 fleet offers more flexibility and convenience for business and leisure travellers,” reads an Air Connect Namibia statement.

Air Connect Namibia added that the new flight route reflects the growing demand for connectivity between the well-established Johannesburg and Windhoek routes, supporting tourism, business collaborations, and cultural exchange. With this increase in frequency, travellers will have enhanced flexibility in planning their journeys, making it easier to explore the natural beauty, rich heritage and diverse offerings of both destinations and countries.

Johannesburg is Namibia and Windhoek’s largest international destination city, based on two-way passengers, with the increased capacity expected to meet market demand for the service further.

“Air Connect Namibia is thrilled to welcome the addition of SAA’s third daily flight frequency between Johannesburg and Windhoek. The service is a positive step forward for the destination as we continue to pursue increased international connectivity and ease of air access. The new flight will provide much-needed capacity and offer consumers more choice and flexibility when travelling between the two destinations. Moreover, increased air connectivity leads to mutual benefits; it fosters collaboration between our two cities and strengthens economic ties. With this new flight frequency, we can expect to see an uptick in both inbound and outbound travel, which is essential for the development of our country’s aviation sector,” said Bisey /Uirab, Air Connect Namibia chairperson and CEO of the Namibia Airports Company (NAC).

Air Connect Namibia was established this year and is led by the NAC as a collaborative air service development initiative mandated to improve Namibian air access.

Project stakeholders include NAC, Gondwana Collection, Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board. Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Namibia Tourism Board and the City of Windhoek. The initiative is committed to assisting and supporting carriers who service Namibia’s international airports.
