Sofia Simon, who was appointed as the first-ever substantive secretary general of Netball Namibia (NN) on Friday, said that her appointment marks a significant milestone not only for herself but for the federation.
Simon stated that as netball is predominantly played by women in many regions, being part of the organisation allows her to advocate for gender equality in sport and promote female participation to empower women and contribute positively to societal changes.
“I am excited for the journey ahead, and being appointed within NN represents a chance not just to influence the sport’s trajectory but also to make meaningful contributions towards community development through sports engagement.”
This appointment represents a significant step forward in the development and professionalisation of netball administration in the country, as all previous secretary generals have served on a voluntary basis while maintaining full-time jobs in other fields.
Wealth of experience
Born on 3 February 1998, Simon brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for sports administration. She holds a Diploma in Business Process Management from the Namibia University of Science and Technology and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.
Additionally, she has earned qualifications in International Coaching (swimming) from the Hungarian University of Sports Science, as well as certifications in Personal Training and Event Management.
She has an impressive background as a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Virgin Active Health Club and has been actively involved in youth sports development. She has also worked as a cycling tour guide with Mabaruli Safari Tourism and served as a personal assistant with T-Rex Triathlon Training Tribe, where she coordinated children’s cycling and swimming activities.
In line with her appointment, Simon will form a team to drive the future success of NN, which includes appointing a finance officer and administrative staff. “The appointment of Simon marks a milestone for NN. Her leadership, expertise, and commitment to sports development will be crucial as we build on the groundwork established by our previous voluntary administrators.
“We believe that with her team, NN is ready for remarkable advancements,” said Rebekka Goagoses, the president of NN.
The Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, said this is a historic moment in ensuring that NN finally has a SG, who will manage the federation’s secretariat and oversee the affairs of the sport. “We know that NN is aiming to become a professional sport. We are using them as an example of how a sport code can be professionalised. It is fitting that they now have a SG.
“Although netball is not part of the code for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, this sport will undergo significant transformation to achieve high-level performance in the country,” added Mwiya.
The Deputy Director for Sport in the Ministry of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Irvin Ndjavera, congratulated the federation on this milestone. “In our continued efforts to support netball, there is more to come, and with the appointment of a SG, operations will now be streamlined. We look forward to netball becoming a blueprint for professionalisation alongside other sport codes. The government will remain a supportive partner,” said Ndjavera.
