WHS honours first teams’ achievements

Windhoek High School (WHS) recently celebrated the remarkable achievements of their rugby, netball and boys’ hockey first teams, following outstanding performances in the school leagues.  Each of these teams secured gold medals in their respective competitions this year.

The leagues are designated as follows: rugby is governed by the Namibia Schools Sports Union Rugby, netball falls under Capricorn Netball, and hockey is organised by the Namibia Schools Hockey Association.  Juanita Birch, the public relations and project manager at WHS, told New Era Sport that this accomplishment reflects the commitment and effort of the players, coaches and staff.

Birch said the primary motivator for the teams extends beyond physical training; it encompasses the development of a resilient mindset.

She added that the wellness programme implemented last year, which emphasises spiritual and emotional health, has significantly benefited the pupils, staff and coaches.

“It taught us how to balance our minds and bodies, work as a team, stay focused, and approach challenges together,” she said.

The school was striving for improvement through team-building activities and a commitment to consistently elevate its performance beyond that of 2023.  In the previous year, the WHS netball team achieved a notable accolade, while the rugby team shared first place with Windhoek Gymnasium, and the hockey team finished in second place. “The positive environment, tradition and camaraderie have contributed to the athletes’ ability to push beyond their limits,” she added.

In the comprehensive rugby standings, Windhoek Gymnasium secured a close second position, while Windhoek Afrikaans Private claimed third place. In the netball league, WHS faced competition from Windhoek Gymnasium, which held the second position, while A Shipena Secondary School finished in third. This year, there was no third-place match in the hockey league, with WHS being succeeded by St Paul College in the second position.

New Era engaged team coaches who expressed profound pride in their respective teams. Jan Dames, the rugby team coach, remarked that his team’s success was not solely attributed to their skills on the field. “It was about the heart and determination these boys showed in every practice session and match. They have set a new standard for WHS rugby, and I couldn’t be prouder of their discipline and growth,” he said.

On her part, netball head coach Sune Verdoes said the girls demonstrated resilience and commitment throughout the season.

“Their teamwork and support for one another have been the key to their success. I believe they have created a legacy that will inspire future teams.” she said.

The boys’ hockey coach Johan Weyhe said the spirit of the team was unmatched.

“The boys did not only work hard, but they also showed a deep sense of sportsmanship and brotherhood, which played a crucial role in their triumph,” he said.
