Karibib Football Club continued its supremacy in the inland football tournament by defeating Friends and Family FC in the final of the Top Score Mayoral Cup at the Usab football field this past weekend.
The third edition of the tournament, which began in Swakopmund over three years ago, was praised as a success, with football being the ultimate winner over the two-day event.
Elvin Majiedt, the tournament organiser, told Nampa this week that the event wrapped up successfully without any issues.
“This initiative has achieved the results we aimed for. The tournament was of high quality and proceeded smoothly, showcasing a good standard of football from all the participating teams,” he stated.
Majiedt said football emerged as the true victor, since they plan to uphold and enhance the standards that keep young people engaged in sports.
He mentioned that the next edition will take place in Otjimbingwe, aiming to create opportunities for rural teams that often face challenges travelling to towns for the tournament due to financial constraints.
“Next year, we will host this tournament in Otjimbingwe to also include rural teams, and enable the tournament to expand throughout the entire Erongo Region,” he remarked.
The tournament featured a total of 14 teams, primarily from Karibib, along with contributions from Okahandja and nearby areas.
The semi-final saw Karibib FC leverage their home advantage, facing off against the visiting Okahandja FC in a match that concluded with a 3-1 victory for the hosts.
The second semi-final featured a local clash, where Predators went head-to-head with Friends and Family FC. Friends and Family demonstrated significant skills and resilience, eliminating their rivals and securing a place in the final after a decisive 2-0 win over Predators.
The final match was a derby, an intense showdown between two strong Karibib teams, each eager to establish dominance as they vied for pride.
However, renowned for such tournaments, Karibib FC showcased their strength with an outstanding performance, overpowering their opponent, providing them with few scoring opportunities, while taking control with two remarkable goals in each half to secure their first Top Score trophy.
As champions, Karibib FC took home N$15 000 and a trophy, while Friends and Family received N$8 000 for their second-place finish.
Predators and Okahandja FC each earned N$3 000 as semi-finalists.
