At a tender age, Milco Solunga has already made a significant mark in the world of football.
As the starting goalkeeper for the Khomas Regional U/17 team, which recently competed in the prestigious 2024 Yangzhou China Grand Canal Cities Men’s Elite Youth Football Tournament, where they took second place, Solunga’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep love for the sport.
His football journey began at the tender age of six when he joined Ramblers Soccer Academy. His early days were filled with the joy of learning the game, surrounded by peers who shared the same passion. “I started playing football at the age of six,” he recalls. “Later, I moved to Athletic Club Football Academy, now known as Julinho Athletic Football Academy, which is my current team.”
His transition to Julinho Athletic not only honed his skills, but also solidified his ambition to excel. Football, for the rising star, transcends mere sport; it is a lifestyle. “What I enjoy most about football is the fact that there will always be a next match.” It drives me to improve and be ready.”
The thrill of the game, combined with the constant opportunity for growth, fuels his dedication.
As the starting goalkeeper for the Khomas Regional team, his responsibilities were immense. “My role was to help the team play out from the back, direct and organise from behind, and make crucial saves,” he shared confidently.
His experience in China has been transformative, exposing him to new cultures, and the realities of professional football.
“I’ve learned how to manage a game when we are a goal up, and the importance of staying calm and collected throughout.”
Solunga’s family is a significant pillar in his life, comprising eight members: his parents, two sisters, and four brothers. “My family has been my driving force,” he reflects, adding that they have always supported him, pushing him to reach heights he once thought unattainable.
His brothers, Luis and Eduardo Solunga, are also involved in football, representing the country in Futsal competitions. This familial bond creates a nurturing environment, allowing the young goalkeeper to pursue his dreams with their unwavering encouragement.
Over the years, Solunga has participated in numerous local tournaments hosted by various academies.
However, it is the international competitions that stand out in his memory. “The most memorable ones are the Cosafa U/15 tournament, where I earned my first cap, and the Grand Canal Cities Youth Football Tournament, where I had a Man of the Match performance,” he recalls with pride. Each tournament has not only tested his skills, but also provided invaluable experiences that contribute to his growth as an athlete.
Solunga believes that football has evolved significantly over the years. “The game has gotten a lot faster,” he observes.
“It demands more footwork and intelligence. For goalkeepers, the level has risen; we are required to be more involved in play, especially in building up from the back.”
This evolution excites him, as it enhances his involvement in matches, making every game a thrilling challenge.
Pre-game rituals are essential for many athletes, and while Solunga doesn’t subscribe to superstitions, he has his own methods to prepare.
“I enjoy sleeping before games, or during the ride to the stadium,” he shares. This practice helps him remain calm and focused, ensuring he enters the game with a clear mind.
If given the chance to play anywhere in the world without the constraints of time or money, he dreams of playing in Brazil. “The passion, support and love they have for the game is surreal,” he said. However, he also cherishes his roots in Namibia, where he began his football journey. “It would be a great place to end my career,” he added, reflecting on the deep connection he has with his home country.
Motivation is crucial in football, especially during challenging matches. Solunga’s secret lies in his perspective on the game. “I know I will always get a second chance to play football,” he stated. Watching highlights of great goalkeepers inspires him, but it’s the music that truly energises him before a game. “It really hits the spot and gets me in motion,” he reveals.
Off the pitch, he enjoys traditional Namibian food like kapana and Roco Mama’s burgers, though he treats himself to these delicacies sparingly. He dreams of visiting cities like London and Cape Town, fascinated by their culture and vibrancy.
Above all, he attributes his success to his faith. “I want to give thanks to Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour for the opportunity and guidance.”
This spiritual foundation fuels his ambition, reminding him to stay grounded and grateful as he navigates the challenges of his burgeoning career.
