In Otjomuise, not far from the shopping centre, you will find Lukolongo Christian’s small but well-known shoe shop.
Locals here call him ‘Papa Chris’, and his shop has become a favourite spot for those looking to buy good-quality, affordable footwear.
He sells second-hand high-end sneakers, sandals, loafers and women’s shoes.
Papa Chris also offers shoe repairs and cleaning. For many in the area, it is the place to go for shoes that look good and don’t cost a fortune.
Christian sources his shoes from Europe – mostly from Portugal and France – and he prides himself on the quality he offers.
“These shoes come from Europe, not from South Africa or anywhere in Africa,” he added.
“I sell them at N$250 to N$ 300, which is much cheaper than what you’d pay in stores for new ones,” he said.
His shop carries sizes 6 to 9 for both men and women, so there’s something for most customers.
What makes Christian’s shop popular is how much more affordable his shoes are, compared to what you will find in larger retail stores. In other shops, a pair of branded sneakers can easily set you back N$1 000 to N$4 000. For many Namibians, especially students and young workers, these prices are just too high. Christian, on the other hand, offers a much more budget-friendly option. “I know it’s tough for a lot of people right now,” he said.
“That’s why I sell good shoes at prices people can actually afford,” he continued.
Lukas Petrus, a first-year student, is one of many who have discovered the value of shopping at Papa Chris’ shop. “A friend of mine told me about this place when I was looking for basketball sneakers,” he said.
“I went in, and was amazed at how much cheaper the shoes were compared to the stores I had been to. I can get a good pair of shoes now, use them for a while, and not have to spend too much money. As a student, it really helps,” he added.
Knowledge Tjetjinda, another loyal customer, agrees.
“As a student, it’s hard to find the money for expensive shoes, but with Mr Chris, I can get quality shoes that will last. It’s great for people like me who need something that’s durable but don’t have a lot of money to spend. I don’t feel guilty buying a pair of shoes here,” he remarked.
While price is a big factor, the quality of the shoes is what keeps people coming back. Christian carefully selects the shoes he sells, and even though they are second-hand, they’re often in great condition.
Many of his customers say the shoes are just as good as new ones from bigger stores. “I want to make sure people get good value for their money,” he noted.
“The shoes I sell are of quality, and I try to keep them in the best shape possible.”
