MARIENTAL – The Mariental Municipality on Wednesday informed residents of a water supply interruption affecting Aimablaagte and Empelheim – two residential areas in the town.
In a public notice, the municipality said the water supply interruption started on Tuesday, and was caused by challenges NamWater is experiencing with the extraction of water from Hardap Dam. As a result, households in Aimablaagte and Empelheim will be without water until the issue is resolved, the municipality added.
The council urged community members to be patient until the issue is rectified. “NamWater is attending to the water supply problem, and we will keep the residents informed on the progress. In the meantime, the municipality will go around Aimablaagte and Empelheim, providing water to those in need of it,” it said.
The statement also informed the Mariental community that since 16 December, water levels at the dam have dropped to a concerning 5.7%.
This is not the first time the community has faced water shortages due to the declining levels in the Hardap Dam.
Back in late October, a similar crisis occurred, and around 70% of the Mariental population went for five days without water.
