Rössing invests in Erongo health

SWAKOPMUND – Healthcare in the Erongo region has received a much-needed boost after Rössing Uranium donated N$1.25 million to the health ministry this week.

The donation will benefit Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Usakos hospitals, which have long struggled with ageing infrastructure and a lack of equipment. The funds are earmarked for security upgrades, essential machinery and renovations to improve patient and staff welfare.

Rössing Uranium managing director Johan Coetzee said the company is committed to supporting regional healthcare.

“The health of our people is the foundation upon which all progress is built. Improving healthcare infrastructure and supporting professionals is essential for a prosperous Namibia,” he said.

The Swakopmund District Hospital will use part of the funds to construct a boundary wall, addressing years of security concerns caused by a porous perimeter.

In Usakos, the district hospital is set to receive an industrial laundry machine. This addition will reduce costs by eliminating the need to outsource laundry services, ensuring cleaner, more efficient operations.

Meanwhile, the psychiatric ward at the Walvis Bay District Hospital will be renovated to provide a safer and more dignified environment for mental health patients.

“This support reflects our commitment to the well-being of the communities we operate in, especially in mental healthcare, where the environment plays a crucial role in recovery,” he noted.

Regional health director Anna Jonas welcomed the support, emphasising the importance of safe and well-equipped facilities.

“We serve over 240 000 people in this region, with most relying on public healthcare. The donation will significantly improve services and the overall, environment for patients and staff.

Jonas added that the upgrades would enhance infection control and patient dignity.

“A clean and safe space is critical for recovery. The laundry machine and secure boundaries will improve hygiene and safety, while the psychiatric ward renovations will give patients the care and respect they deserve,” she noted.

Meanwhile, work on the Swakopmund boundary wall has already begun, while the Usakos laundry machine is expected to be installed by the end of this month. Renovations to the Walvis Bay psychiatric ward are also likely to start soon. -edeklerk@nepc.com.na
