Grand Prix a success – Karumendu

Quinton-Steele Botes Athletics Club dominated proceedings at the first Athletics Namibia (AN) Grand Prix Series at Swakopmund’s Vineta Stadium.

Over 100 athletes converged at the coastal town, where they battled it out for top spots during the event.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, event organiser Berthold Karumendu said he was happy with how the event turned out this past weekend.

The event saw seasoned athletes, including those trying to make their mark in the world of athletics, all competing in healthy competition for top honours.

“This event lived up to our expectations as the organisers of this event. Many people came from various regions to compete. I liked the level of competition. It showed that people have that hunger to compete,” he said.

Quinton-Steele Botes Athletics Club dominated, followed by Athletic Development Club in second place, Oshana Nampol in third place and the Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) in fourth place.

Touching on the crucial part of the competition, Karumendu said these are not regular competitions, but serve as preparation for various international competitions.

“I think it’s important that we realise how vital such events are to us if we hope to make an impact on the international stage. This is where we discover talent, and hone it while preparing for major international competitions. I believe our athletes should start taking these competitions seriously,” he said.

The next event will be held in Windhoek before they travel to Rietfontein, where another series of the Grand Prix will be hosted.
