MTC launches ‘MTC Run Connect Half-Marathon’

Telecommunication giants, MTC will host a new racing event, “The MTC Run Connect” early next month, with all proceeds from the event going toward a charitable cause.

The announcement was made yesterday during the official launch at MTC headquarters in Olympia, Windhoek. The race, sanctioned by Athletics Namibia is set to take place in Windhoek and will serve as a qualifier for major international competitions such as South Africa’s Two Oceans marathon.

The event will feature three race categories, 5 kilometre (m), 10km, and 21km, attracting elite runners competing for top prizes.

Speaking at the launch, MTC’s corporate affairs manager John Ekongo, emphasised that the initiative is part of the company’s commitment to giving back to the community.

“MTC has always strived to uplift the communities in which it operates, whether by providing financial aid to those in need, building classrooms for schools lacking infrastructure, or equipping the unemployed with skills to start their entrepreneurial journey. Today, we are taking a different approach,” he said.

“We decided to give back but this time to the body. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Namibia National Children’s Heart Trust, which ensures that Namibian patients born with congenital heart disease receive affordable, accessible, equitable, timely, safe and sustainable care, regardless of their socio-economic background.”

MTC has partnered with national children trust, a trust that ensures Namibian patients born with congenital heart diseases are provided with affordable care.

Founder of the children’s trust Hetty Nelumbu expressed gratitude for MTC’s involvement in the initiative and highlighted the importance of expanding the project nationwide.

“This year, as we continue to grow, we aim to expand our reach, inspire more participation and make a greater impact in our communities. This growth is proof that passion, consistency, and community support can turn small ideas into powerful movements,” she said. Registrations are going for N$ 50 to N$150.
