The Wanderers Rugby Club kicked off their pre-season preparations in style with a commanding 28-14 victory over Grootfontein in the finals of the Castle Lite 10-a-side rugby tournament.
The event was held at the United Sports Ground in Olympia.
The rugby season curtain-raiser tournament began on Friday and concluded on Saturday.
Wanderers defended their title for the second consecutive year.
In the women’s final, Unam emerged victorious, defeating Trustco United 14-8 in an exciting showdown to claim the championship.
Wanderers’ head coach expressed delight with the win.
He said the victory will boost the players’ morale ahead of the new season.
“It was a great tournament, and winning the cup is a huge confidence booster as we prepare for the new rugby season. This competition is important because it exposes new talent. It allows us to assess players’ fitness levels,” he remarked.
Regarding his team’s performance, the coach said he is pleased with how the players embraced the challenge and used the tournament to test their readiness for the season ahead.
“We had a young and energetic pool of players who were ready to test themselves ahead of the new season. I think the tournament is a massive one. Credits to United for putting up a tournament of that calibre, which gave players and coaches time to gauge teams,” he said.
Unam Ladies triumphed 14-12 against Trustco United to clinch the women’s division trophy.
This is the second time Unam is winning the cup.
