KEETMANSHOOP – Former deputy minister of defence Philemon Malima has described the late Founding President Sam Nujoma as the Jesus of Namibia.

It is Malima’s conviction that without Nujoma’s contribution, the country would not have gained its independence.

“He was the commanding chief during the liberation struggle. If it was not for him, this country would not have gotten independence. His legacy will remain forever in the hearts and minds of Namibians.

“We have lost a father, a commander-in-chief and our prophet, who wanted this country to be independent and peaceful. He also reminded us to ensure we take care of our resources, and that every Namibian enjoys these resources,” said Malima during an interview with Nampa on Sunday.

Nujoma’s nephew, David Nuyoma, said he will remember his uncle as a man who dedicated his whole life to the well-being of Namibians before and after independence.

Nuyoma, during an interview with Nampa on Sunday at Nujoma’s residence, said everything was about Namibia and for Namibians for the late statesman.

“He wanted Namibians to reach a high level of welfare and well-being. He went through a lot that has been documented all over. As a family man, he was caring, loving and giving. He didn’t just give to family, but to everyone,” he stressed.

He said the late president cared dearly for the less-privileged, and spoke out passionately against gender-based violence.

“He spoke of big things and his vision for Namibia. I believe some of what he expressed is still to come. In his DNA, there was nothing but Namibia and its people.

“Remember, he also advocated for the reconciliation policy, where he said Namibia is big enough to accommodate everyone…that we should learn to live together in harmony,” he added.

Nujoma is survived by his wife Kovambo; his children Utoni, Sacky and Usuta; as well as his siblings Julia, Hiskia and Noah.

He also leaves behind grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nujoma died on Saturday night at a Windhoek hospital at the age of 95.
