Namport lauds Nujoma’s impeccable vision

WALVIS BAY – Founding President Sam Nujoma envisioned the Port of Walvis Bay as a vital gateway, not only for Namibia, but for the entire Southern African region.

This was highlighted by Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) CEO Andrew Kanime in a memorial tribute held in Nujoma’s honour on Friday.

Nujoma’s unwavering commitment to regional integration is evident in how Namibia granted landlocked nations such as Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana land to establish their dry ports, ensuring access to global markets.

This visionary act was not for Namibia’s gain alone, but a strategic move to uplift the entire region, fostering economic growth and connectivity in the SADC community.

Kanime reflected on the late statesman’s legacy, particularly his impact on Namibia’s port infrastructure, saying Nujoma’s vision for the ports was that of national and economic prosperity.

“They are the bridges that connect us to the world and the anchors that stabilise our economy,” Kanime said, quoting Nujoma’s words.

Kanime highlighted that the reintegration of Walvis Bay into Namibia in 1994 was one of Nujoma’s monumental achievements, as he recognised the strategic importance of Walvis Bay.

Nujoma relentlessly pursued its return from South African control. His foresight ensured that this critical port became an integral part of Namibia’s economic framework, he stated.

“Under Nujoma’s leadership, Namibia embraced the philosophy that its ports should serve not just Namibians, but also neighbouring nations. He continuously reminded us that Namibian ports do not belong to Namibia only, but that they also belong to our neighbours, to the region, and indeed to the whole African continent,” Kanime added.

He said Nujoma’s deep interest in Namibia’s ports extended beyond policy; he was personally involved in their development, as he took great pride in witnessing firsthand how these facilities contributed to national and regional development.

“Just as a lighthouse guides a ship through stormy waters, Nujoma steered us through the rough seas of colonial rule to independence. So, let his vision remain a guiding principle for us all,” he said.
