Exhibitors grateful for strong turnout at totem expo

OSHAKATI – Vendors at the ongoing Oshakati Totem Expo have expressed appreciation for the large turnout recorded over the weekend.

They said it has brought a much-needed boost to their businesses.

The expo, which kicked off on Friday, is scheduled to run until 7 June.

The totem expo, a hallmark event in the north, brings together people from different regions to celebrate culture, innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition, the expo provides a platform for local businesses to thrive.

From food and beverages stalls and clothing stands to small-scale artisans, vendors across the board have described the first days of the event as encouraging.

Many said they are hopeful the crowd will continue to grow throughout the week.

One of the most popular food stalls, Mweshy Braai, known for its sizzling meat platters and lively atmosphere, reported brisk sales since opening day.

“We are truly grateful for the support from the public. People came in numbers right from the start. That motivates us to keep our grills hot and service sharp. We hope the momentum continues until the final day,” said the owner of Mweshy Braai.

Another vendor, Yambeka Shivolo of the Durban Lifestyle stall, said so far, the business is going well.

She is happy for the large turnout.

“We hope for the best. We still have days left. We are grateful for this chance to sell at the Oshakati Totem Expo,’’ she stated.

Selma Nangolo, who sells handmade Owambo dresses and beadwork, said she nearly sold out over the weekend.

“I didn’t expect such a great response so early. This expo helps us, small business owners, to gain visibility and earn some income. I’m hopeful the rest of the week will be as good,” she said with a smile.

First-time vendor Petrus Hamunyela, who runs a toys accessories stand, described the experience as overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s not just about sales. It’s also about networking and showcasing what we have to offer. The turnout so far gives us hope that this year will be one of the best editions yet,” he said.

Oshakati Town Council spokesperson Katarina Kamari said they are pleased with the public’s response.

They expect even larger crowds in the days leading up to the closing ceremony.

With music, entertainment and cultural exhibitions lined up throughout the week, vendors and visitors look forward to a festive and fruitful expo.
