KEETMANSHOOP – In the mining town of Rosh Pinah, local resident George Zahl has made it his civic duty to guide the youth towards a brighter future through sport.
Using his free time, Zahl mentors young football players, steering them away from the dangers of the streets—such as substance abuse, immorality, and petty crime.
Speaking to New Era in an exclusive interview, Zahl said he founded the Kaizen Football Academy in 2011 with the goal of nurturing talent and providing a constructive outlet for the town’s youth. Today, the academy caters to more than 160 players, ranging from U/7 to U/21 level. “These boys and girls are full of potential. My dream is to help them develop their skills and hopefully reach greater heights in their football careers,” he explained.
The Kaizen Academy teams regularly participate in local tournaments and have even tested their abilities beyond Namibia’s borders. In 2013, some of the academy’s age-group teams travelled to Cape Town to face Ajax Cape Town’s youth sides.
Zahl proudly highlighted some of the academy’s standout achievements. Among them is Julia Tjitambara, who currently represents Namibia’s U/17 national team, and Johandre Motinga, who has played in China and Germany – testament to the opportunities that dedication and hard work can bring.
At present, the Kaizen Football Academy is on the verge of clinching the //Kharas third division title after an unbeaten run throughout the season. However, Zahl’s ultimate dream is to see his players one day competing in Namibia’s national league.
“Coaching these youngsters on a voluntary basis is my passion. It brings me great satisfaction to see them prosper, stay off the streets, and follow a positive path in life.”
Zahl expressed gratitude to all corporate, private, and individual sponsors who continue to support the academy when assistance is needed.
