One of Namibia’s most iconic Oviritje music groups, Ongoro Nomundu, is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary next month, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s music history.
Known for their groundbreaking sound and socially conscious lyrics, the group has become a cultural core, shaping the Namibian music space.
Sello Marenga, the longest-serving member of the group since 2002, said they have been focused on addressing social ills, celebrating their roots, educating their supporters and inspiring unity.
“Our music also includes personal elements, like mentioning fans’ names in songs, which helps our listeners connect deeply with the message,” he stated.
The celebration, scheduled for 2 August, is expected to draw fans, fellow artists and music lovers from across the country to honour the influence and contribution to the industry.
“It’s a huge milestone. It shows our strength and unity. Ongoro Nomundu isn’t just a band but a family. This journey of 25 is a testament to loyalty, endurance and purpose,” Marenga remarked.
As Ongoro Nomundu looks ahead, their legacy stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to unite, inspire and provoke thought.
For many Namibians, the group’s journey is more than a soundtrack.
It is a movement.
The band is prepared to radiate joy and excitement on the day, with Marenga saying they will celebrate it in a big way.
“We’re celebrating big! It’s a full family affair, with seven-a-side football, jumping castles, food stalls and, of course, live music. Fans can expect the full Ongoro experience, joy, dance and powerful performances,” he said.
While reflecting on their journey and looking ahead, the group shared a heartfelt promise to their supporters.
“We promise to keep entertaining, healing and uniting people through our sound. As we always say, Ongoro is the cherry on top – sweet and unforgettable,” he said.
Looking beyond music, the group is setting its sights on growth and legacy.
“We’re expanding. We have officially registered the band and are venturing into fashion (clothing line), a record label and events management. The goal is to build a legacy beyond the stage,” stated Marenga.
As Ongoro Nomundu celebrates 25 years in the industry, its journey reflects more than just musical success.
It is about a story of unity, resilience, and cultural impact.
With bold plans to expand beyond the stage, the group remains committed to inspiring and uplifting through sound, style and legacy.
“We strongly believe in mentorship and collaboration to ensure that the next generation carries the torch stronger and even more creatively,” said Marenga.
