Industry Loop – Business is business

Industry Loop – Business is business

The podcast version of #IndustryLoop hosted Robert Shipanga recently. Robert is the founder of Blend Productions…the same label that gave birth to Exit and Mushe. Robert worked wonders because look at Exit and Mushe today…both successful in their own right. Robert’s wisdom is unmatched when it comes to the business of music because when it comes to Robert, business is business. Regardless of the nature of the service/product…business is business largely explains how Exit and Mushe are one of the most recognisable brands in this industry.

In that conversation with Robert, he confirms what I’ve been saying for years on this platform…that artists do not understand what the role of a manager is supposed to be. In a Namibian artist’s head, a manager is supposed to fund their career. In a Namibian artist’s head…a manager is supposed to not expect return on investment. In a Namibian artist’s head, a manager has no say in the creative side of things and must just be happy with whatever the artist creates.

This is why I never entertained the idea of managing an artist. I could never. I will lose my mind. Here’s the thing…NSK, as a manager, will expect an artist to actually be prepared with several draft concepts before showing up at a studio. NSK, as a manager, will not allow any alcohol or drugs at the studio. NSK, as a manager, will not settle for a substandard product. NSK, as a manager, will force you to re-record anything NSK deems below average.

NSK, as a manager, will be blunt and brutally honest. NSK, as a manager, will expect you to be on time for any obligation of any nature. NSK, as a manager, will expect you to create content EVERYDAY for socials. Do you think NSK, as a manager, will be in a successful business relationship with an artist with all these ethos as listed (not limited to)? So no…I am not entertaining the world of managing an artist.

However, for people like Robert, an experienced music executive who had the patience to manage artists, debunks a majority of an artist’s impression of what a manager should be in that chat on the podcast version of #IndustryLoop.

I really think it’s shocking that in 2025, an artist still has no idea what a manager is supposed to be. Well, we have provided an opportunity for you to learn. Watch the episode with Robert Shipanga. It’s up on the New Era YouTube platform. Especially if you are an artist and you think of approaching anyone to manage your brand, watch that episode first…learn and move with wisdom.

Also, once you are done watching the episode…don’t be silent. Leave a comment or help us with your thoughts using the hashtag #IndustryLoop. Perhaps you disagree with Robert or me. If that’s the case, walk us through your thought process. We will be waiting for your feedback.

Until the next Loop, we say #GMTM
