Shalulile makes history

Namibian international footballer, Peter Shalulile, has achieved a notable milestone, equalling the Betway Premier Soccer League (PSL) all-time goal-scoring record with 129 goals, a feat that puts him level with Siyabonga Nomvethe.

The Sundowns striker scored his 129th PSL goal, his first of the new 2025/26 season, during the Magesi match at a packed Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday evening.

The milestone by the Namibian international comes just two weeks after speculation that he might be leaving Sundowns to join Tunisian giants Esperance.

Speaking to SuperSport TV after the Magesi tie, Shalulile was full of gratitude to his Sundowns teammates, stating, “To be honest, I just want to thank my teammates.” He also expressed confidence in his goal-scoring ability for the rest of the season.

“I am looking forward to the new season, my first start. I don’t want to mention more things about the top goal scorer because I know it’s going to end very well this year.”

Shalulile also revealed his ambitious target of 25 goals for the season. “To score many more goals, I believe that many goals will come; I just need to get my confidence back,” he added. “25 goals, with God by my side, it’s possible.”

With the win, Sundowns moved into third place in the league standings. Their focus now shifts to the MTN8 semi-final second leg, where they will host Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville tomorrow.

Football pundit Kavee Kazemburuka said Shalulile needed game time to rediscover his goal-scoring form. He started against Magesi FC and delivered by scoring, which saw him tie the all-time South African goalscoring record of 129 goals in all competitions. That strike is a huge confidence booster for both him and his team.

“Shalulile is now just one goal away from breaking the record, and as long as the coach continues to utilise him, it seems only a matter of time before he sets a new milestone. With that goal, he has likely won back the trust of the coach, who had previously considered him surplus to requirements.

“In short, Shalulile is back, and so are the goals, coming at the perfect time ahead of Namibia’s crucial Fifa World Cup qualifier matches against Malawi and São Tomé in Botswana this September,” added Kazemburuka.  -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
