What began as a casual interest has grown into a deep-rooted passion for Vistorina Ugulu, the energetic centre for Unam Jaguars.
Now a key player in the MTC Netball Namibia Premier League, her journey into the netball court was sparked not by pressure or ambition, but by simple curiosity.
“I first tried netball out of curiosity, as I enjoy exploring new activities, and it quickly captured my interest. As I practiced and improved, I received encouraging compliments from my coaches and fans, which motivated me to keep developing my skills and enjoy the sport even more.”
What followed was a steady progression, from a newcomer with curiosity to a committed athlete with a growing love for the game. For Ugulu, netball has come to represent more than just sport. It’s about achievement, self-belief, and the support of a team and community.
“Representing Unam Jaguars means being part of a team where I can give my best, develop my skills, and proudly contribute to the club’s success,” she says.
Playing in the Premier League has been a major step up in intensity, a challenge Vistorina has embraced.
“The competition is tougher than anything I’ve experienced before. The faster pace and greater challenge make it exciting, and it really pushes me to challenge myself more,” she admitted.
In her position as centre, Ugulu is constantly engaged, balancing both offensive drives and defensive duties.
“It keeps me moving all game. I’ve learnt to balance fitness, speed, and decision-making by focusing on both training and mindset. I stay aware of the game, anticipate plays, and make wise decisions even when fatigue sets in.”
Off the court, she’s equally driven. As a master’s degree student in Informatics, she juggles academic demands with her athletic commitments through structured planning and focus.
“I schedule study sessions around training and matches, prioritize deadlines, and stay organised. That way, I can give my best both academically and on the court.”
One of her proudest moments came in just her third game, when she was named Player of the Match.
“A fan told me I inspired her because she didn’t like being short, and seeing me play gave her confidence. That was touching. It made me feel proud and motivated to keep enjoying the game and giving my best.”
She says Martha ‘Ndeshi’ Shaampeni, a skilled and fit opponent from NCS, is the toughest player she has faced so far, a match-up that taught her to stay alert, focused, and adaptive.
Looking forward, Ugula is clear about her personal goals. “I want to continue developing my fitness, game sense, and decision-making.
I aim to be reliable, supportive, adaptable, and to give 100% in every match to help the team achieve its goals.”
