Pro-bono driving school shifts youth into gear

Young people in Rosh Pinah are steering their way toward new opportunities – thanks to the Rosh Pinah Zinc (RPZ) Driving School initiative.

The programme is changing lives one licence at a time.

Launched in 2024, the initiative provides fully funded driving lessons and licence testing to residents between the ages of 18 and 35.

For many in the community, the cost of lessons, transport to testing centres and fees has long been a roadblock to getting a driver’s license.

RPZ has removed that barrier by covering all expenses – including travel to Oranjemund, the nearest town with a testing facility – and offering 15 professional driving lessons to each participant.

For beneficiaries, the programme represents more than just a set of driving skills.

It opens the door to employment, self-reliance and personal growth in a town where job prospects often depend on mobility.

Since the initiative’s rollout, more than 40 young people have benefitted, many of whom are now proudly licensed drivers.

One participant, Vanessa Anderson, shared how the experience changed her life.

“I never thought I’d be able to afford driving lessons, but RPZ made it possible. The instructor was patient and encouraging. When I passed my test in October 2024, I felt an incredible sense of pride. Having a licence has given me freedom and confidence I didn’t have before,” she stated.

The Driving School Initiative forms part of RPZ’s broader commitment to community upliftment through education, skills development and empowerment.

By investing in local capacity beyond mining operations, the company continues to support the growth of a resilient and thriving Rosh Pinah.

As the initiative enters its second year, RPZ is looking to expand its reach and impact. The company believes that small investments in people’s skills can drive long-term change for the entire community.

“When we equip young people with skills like driving, we’re not just giving them independence. We are helping them access greater opportunities. This programme reflects our belief that empowering youth is key to building a stronger future for Rosh Pinah,” said George Zaahl, RPZ’s community liaison officer.

With more local drivers on the road and more doors opening to employment, RPZ’s Driving School Initiative is proving that empowerment does not always start in the classroom, but it sometimes begins behind the wheel.
