The Directorate of Sport Development under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture officially launched the 12th edition of the Erongo Powersave Street Mile yesterday in Windhoek.

The much-anticipated event is set to take place this coming Saturday in Omaruru.

Race director and Erongo regional sport officer Berthold Karumendu said the event has seen remarkable growth over the years.

“The race has grown surprisingly over the 12 years. This year’s edition promises to be even better,” he said.

What started with only 484 participants in its inaugural year has now grown to attract over 1 500 runners.

To ensure participation from across the country, transport will be provided from all 14 regions to Omaruru and back.

Registration will take place physically on Friday and Saturday morning before the race, a shift from the usual online registration process.

The competition features a wide range of categories, including the T53 and T54 wheelchair races, masters (50+ years), veterans (40 to 49 years), juniors (14 to 19 years) and seniors (20 to 39 years), reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and mass participation.

The event celebrates continued support from Erongo Powersave Wholesale, which serves as the main sponsor with a contribution of N$120 000, alongside FNB Namibia with N$20 000.

Other long-standing supporters include Shield Namibia, the Omaruru local authority and Coca-Cola.

“We are deeply grateful to all our sponsors for their continued support throughout the years,” Karumendu added.

Speaking at the launch, Letu Hamhola, chief sport officer in the ministry, highlighted the significance of the event for the town and the sporting community.

“It’s quite a joyous occasion to see sport going back to Omaruru and becoming a hub for athletic excellence,” he said.
