Road accidents mar weekend

RUNDU – The police in the Otjozodjupa region will release the names of the deceased victims of the Thursday night accident along the B1, Otjiwarongo-Okahandja highway in the Otjozondjupa region, today.

The vehicle was travelling to Windhoek from Rundu.

 It crashed into an oil drum, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to overturn.

This resulted in the deaths of three people, who died on the spot. 

The accident occurred some 70 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo towards Okahandja on Thursday night at around 23h00. 

The driver (56) and one passenger were transported by an ambulance to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital. 

He has not sustained any major injuries.  The 25-year-old female survivor sustained pelvic and right leg injuries and was transported to Windhoek.

“It is alleged that the driver of a white Toyota Double Cab was driving from Rundu to Windhoek to take his mother (one of the deceased) to the hospital when, at about 72 km from Otjiwarongo towards Okahandja, he allegedly drove over a drum with oil that was in the middle of the road. It is suspected that the drum might have fallen from an unknown vehicle. As a result, the driver drove over it, and he lost control of the vehicle, and it overturned,’’ said Otjozondjupa police spokesperson Maureen Mbeha.

There were five occupants in the vehicle, including the driver. Three passengers died at the scene.

In an unrelated matter, David Ndadaleka Mendjayi (34) fell out of a vehicle when the rear door opened itself.  He was run over by another vehicle travelling behind.

The incident occured on Friday at around 14h30 on Oshiweda-Eembaxu gravel road between Oshuulu and Onakalunga villages. 

The victim died on the spot. 

His next of kin are informed. 

Police investigations continue. 

In another incident Saturday, at about 02h00 on A1 Road near Hosea Kutako Airport, it is alleged that a truck from Botswana overturned after the driver lost control over it. 

The truck was carrying furniture. 

The driver, a Mostwana, aged 32, sustained injuries on his left arm and was transported to hospital. 

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

On Sunday, at about 03h15 on the Karibib road at some 10km towards Okahandja, it is alleged that a vehicle with a Walvis Bay registration number, was travelling from Walvis bay, overturned. 

The two occupants, 42-year-old Namibian male driver and his 29-year-old female passenger, were taken to the Okahandja State Hospital and are in stable condition.

In Windhoek, Katutura,on Sunday at around 01h50 at the corner of Clemence Kapuo and Independence Avenue, Katutura, it is alleged that the driver, who was the sole occupant of a sedan vehicle, died after he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a gate of a house.

The vehicle landed on the roof, causing the death of the driver. 

The driver is identified, but his next of kin is not yet informed.
