Africa Investment Firm, which is based in Rundu, yesterday donated 33 tracksuits and 33 golf shirts worth N$22 000 to the Kavango East football team that will participate in the annual Namibian Newspaper Cup starting this Easter Weekend at Swakopmund.
Besides the players and technical team gear, the firm also boosted the U/20 regional team with a cash injection of N$10 000 to help with logistics and other necessities that come along with preparing for a national competition.
“We received a letter from the chief regional officer asking for assistance, so we looked at it and we thought of giving the team the tracksuits and golf shirts and some money as a token of our support,” said Sikongo Daniel from Africa Investment Firm.
“This team is for all of us here in the Kavango East Region and if they win we will celebrate together and if things don’t go right we will all still stick together and see where to improve,” Sikongo added.
According to Kavango East sports officer Erastus Someno, Africa Investment Firm has always supported his office.
“My relationship with Africa Investment has been on for the past three years. They have been watering our field – remember there was a time the Rundu sports stadium, that caters not only for sports events but also cultural and political events in the region, had no water for five months. They stood up and they were watering our stadium with their tanker trucks at no cost,” Someno said.
“And this relationship continued for three years and every time I call them they assist us positively and I think if our business community in general can be like these guys then sports will be in the right hands. We applaud them for the good deed they are doing – we are grateful for the tracksuits and more,” added an appreciative Someno.
Kavango East Governor Dr Samuel Mbambo said: “This is a moment of happiness for us as a region because the standard that we put up last year in terms of preparations for this event has become a challenge to ourselves. We can’t go to this competition unprepared because we prepared well last year. The clothes or attire that one puts on in a game speaks volume, so we have to maintain those standards,” said Mbambo, who received the sponsorship on behalf of the regional team.
He added: “I’m still waiting to be briefed on the preparations but now I can see that things are moving, there are signs that the organisers are working very hard to ensure that our team will go to Swakopmund in high spirits to challenge whoever they will face.
