Six armed robbers impersonating police officers on Saturday allegedly robbed a shop of N$5 000 and an iPhone 8 at an industrial park in the capital. Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said this at the weekend crime media briefing in the capital on Sunday.
She said the incident occurred at around 14h45 when the six suspects, allegedly armed with two pistols, arrived at a shop owned by Chinese nationals. Four of the suspects were allegedly wearing the police blue uniforms and reflective jackets, whereas the other two were wearing civilian clothes and City Police face masks.
They allegedly demanded to search the premises, citing they are police officers and had a search warrant, she continued.
“The owner of the shop, who was identified as a Chinese national, refused to open his premises to be searched and told them he was going to call his lawyer first,” said Shikwambi.
Shikwambi noted the suspects allegedly attacked the victim and his fellow countryman, handcuffed them after kicking the shop’s door open and forcefully searched the shop.
“They stole N$5 000 from the shop and an iPhone from one of the victims before they sped off in a grey Toyota Corolla bearing a fake number plate,” explained Shikwambi.
She cautioned members of the public that police officers are identifiable through their uniforms, name tags – and most especially their appointment cards, which have a picture of the officers and the date of the appointment.
Shikwambi added no arrest has been made and police investigations continue.
