Know your Regional Councillors – //Kharas Region

Adolf Kaure

The recent 2025 Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections ushered in new councillors in various constituencies, while some were re-elected in their roles around the country.

We continue to feature the councillors in the following weeks as detailed below. The //Kharas region had approximately 109,893 inhabitants [2023 Census].

The region is predominantly a small stock-farming area, the stock mostly consisting of animals such as sheep or goats.

Game farming and irrigation farming along the Naute Dam and the Orange River have gained significant importance. //Kharas’ economy is driven by mining (diamonds, minerals), agriculture (grapes, dates, livestock), fishing, and its strategic port (Lüderitz), with emerging potential in green hydrogen, oil & gas, and logistics, leveraging its coastline and railway hubs like Keetmanshoop for trade and food security through projects like the Neckartal Dam.

Other notable places in the region include the diamond areas along the coast—both on- and offshore—with Oranjemund as the main centre, mining enterprises in the southern part of Namibia, such as the Haib mine, (Klein Karas area, Rosh Pinah), the Kudu Gas field in the Atlantic Ocean and small-scale industries in Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop.

The region has been divided into seven constituencies, namely the !Nami-#Nus, Berseba, Oranjemund, Karasburg East, Karasburg West, Keetmanshoop Urban and Keetmanshoop Rural.

The town of Keetmanshoop is the main economic centre of the region. -akaure@nepc.com.na
