Former Otjombinde councillor Marenga dies

GOBABIS – Former Otjombinde constituency councillor in the Omaheke region Karii Marenga died on Saturday in Windhoek after being ill. Marenga (65) led the constituency between 2009 and 2015.

Confirming his death to Nampa on Monday, his brother Fessy Rikondja Marenga, described his death as a painful experience, saying the family has lost a giant who was wise and who stood by the family, in all seasons.

“It is a big loss, my brother was admired by many in the field of agriculture, community affairs and even in the political arena.

Karii served the Swapo party with dignity in the Omaheke region and Namibia at large,” said Marenga. Marenga, as a renowned farmer in the Omaheke region, won several awards at various Agricultural exhibition events through his livestock, registered under the brand Karima Brahman Stud. He was at the forefront of the formation of Eastern Epukiro Farmers Association (EEFA), and Omuramba ua Mbinda Conservancy in the region and worked hard for the interest of the Ovambanderu community as well, he said.

“My brother was a foot soldier in many Swapo affairs in the region until he went on to win the councillor position for the Otjombinde constituency.

My brother’s bravery is unmatched as he opened doors for many people,” Marenga recalled.

On his part, Erastus Kahuure, senior chief of the Ovambanderu Traditional Council, described the late Marenga as a brave, intelligent and hardworking person who had the interest of the community at heart. “It is sad to lose people like Karii.

He stood firm and made sure the interests of the community were fulfilled. I am his uncle, and he left a deep void in my heart and the society in general,” Kahuure said. Swapo coordinator for Omaheke region, Ruth Kaukuata-Mbura, described Marenga as a true cadre who worked tirelessly for the party, with immense contribution.

“Marenga served the Swao party from a tender age and continued in his elderly age as secretary general of the elders council. We will miss his unifying spirit and good advice all the time,” said Kaukuata-Mbura

The late Marenga is survived by his wife, eight children 14 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. -Nampa
