Two people died following a train accident near Naute early Sunday morning.
The train, operated by Rovos Rail, derailed at about 05h00. The accident happened near Naute, about 100 kilometres from Keetmanshoop. TransNamib CEO Desmond Van Jaarsveld confirmed the incident and said emergency teams were sent to the scene immediately.
“Our priority was and remains the safety and well-being of all employees and passengers,” he said.
Van Jaarsveld extended condolences to their families.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected during this difficult time,” he said.
An investigation into the cause of the derailment is underway.
TransNamib said it is working with authorities, and that more information will be shared once the investigation is complete.
