All roads lead to Rundu for the 2026 SOEs games

Chairperson of the Public Enterprises CEOs’ Forum, Fluksman Samuehl announced yesterday that Rundu, in the Kavango East, will host the next State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Games.

Samuehl said bringing the games to Rundu will also help boost the local economy.

According to him, the event is expected to bring at least 4 500 people to the region for about five to six days.

“This engagement brings a lot of focus to the region. It is important for the tourism economy because thousands of people will need accommodation, food, entertainment and other services,” he said.

Samuehl added that organisers want local businesses and service providers to benefit from the event. Visitors will use local hotels, restaurants and other services during the games.

He also said the games will give many visitors a chance to learn more about the Kavango East region and its development opportunities. Regional leaders, including the governor and the mayor of Rundu, are expected to address participants during the event. The theme for the upcoming games will celebrate and highlight the contribution of public enterprises, especially those working in the financial and research sectors.

Speaking at the announcement, Spokersperson of the SOEs committee Patty Karuaihe-Martin said the SOEs Games are more than just a sporting event. She said the games help build relationships between government institutions and promote a healthy work environment.

“The games allow colleagues from different institutions to meet not only as professionals but also as teammates. It encourages teamwork and strengthens cooperation in the public sector,” she said. She also noted that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be encouraged to participate by showcasing their products and services during the event. She called on the media and the public to support and promote the games as preparations begin for the event in Rundu.

Yesterday’s announcement comes after the successful hosting of the SOEs Games in Swakopmund last year, which took place from July 24 to 26. The event attracted more than 4 000 employees from over 50 public enterprises across Namibia.

Participants competed in several sporting codes, including football, netball, volleyball, tug of war, darts, pool and athletics. The annual event promotes fitness, teamwork, networking and cooperation among employees working in public institutions.
