RUNDU – Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka on Monday handed over a newly constructed house to Kapango Kavera and her family at Fumbe village in the Mashare constituency.
Kavera, who had spent the last two years sleeping on the bare ground with her grandchildren under a tree, now has a roof over her head – thanks to a collaborative effort between the governor’s office and the Rundu Vocational Training Centre (RVTC).
The two-roomed corrugated zinc structure, which includes a surrounding fence for security, was completed at a cost of N$30 000 using State funds.
“We came here today to react to the news that recently went viral on social media and through Nampa, which alerted my office that there was this family living in a deplorable condition,” Hambyuka said during the handover ceremony.
He noted that the decision to build the zinc structure was a deliberate choice to provide more durable and immediate relief than traditional huts. Previous reports in October 2025 had first brought Kavera’s plight to light.
The report detailed how the elderly woman chose to sleep on the ground because her only piece of furniture, a rusting metal bed frame, offered no comfort for her ageing back.
Her household includes her 44-year-old daughter and seven grandchildren, many of whom were reportedly undocumented and out of school.
“I feel happy for this assistance. We now have a roof over our head,” Kavera remarked.
The governor pledged that his office would furnish the new home with beds and blankets in the coming days.
