The MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing Academy has officially announced that the Tribute to Founding President Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma Boxing Bonanza will take place on 9 May.
Organised in partnership with the Sam Nujoma Foundation, the event aims to celebrate the enduring legacy of Namibia’s founding president, whose influence extended beyond politics into the development of sport, particularly boxing.
The academy confirmed that the highly anticipated bonanza will feature some of the country’s top fighters. Headlining the card, Fillipus Energy Nghitumbwa will defend his WBO Global title against Colombian contender Leonardo Carrillo, the current WBA Latino champion.
Also on the bill, Mateus Heita will defend his WBO Africa title against South Africa’s Zolisa Mbattyi. Rising prospect Harry Simon Jr is set to face Freeman Mbadweke, while Joy Nangolo and Naftalie Shooyapo will also be in action.
The event forms part of its broader mission to improve fighters’ world rankings and position them for future world title opportunities, building on Namibia’s proud history of producing champions.
Beyond the ring, organisers emphasised the wider impact of boxing, noting its role in stimulating various sectors of the economy, including fitness, medical services, catering, marketing and entertainment. The event is also positioned as a platform for youth empowerment, offering young athletes pathways out of difficult circumstances.
They further highlighted boxing’s global appeal, with major events capable of drawing audiences of up to two billion viewers worldwide, both in-person and online.
The academy confirmed that the boxing bonanza is set to become an annual event, serving as a lasting tribute to the country’s founding father while strengthening the local boxing landscape.
Corporate Namibia and the public have been encouraged to support the initiative. The organisers also extended gratitude to main sponsor MTC Namibia, co-sponsor PstBet, and the Namibia Tourism Board for their continued backing.
Tickets for the event will cost N$100 for general access, while VIP tables accommodating 10 guests, including hospitality, are priced at N$20 000.
