Telecom Namibia has confirmed it is fully cooperating with Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) and will provide a comprehensive briefing outlining the root causes of recent network disruptions, the interventions currently underway, and measures being implemented to stabilise services and prevent recurrence.
Telecom made this confirmation after a recent media statement issued by the CRAN regarding recurring broadband service disruptions affecting parts of the country.
Telecom noted CRAN’s concerns regarding the impact of these disruptions on consumers, businesses and institutions, as well as the importance of maintaining quality of service standards and transparent communication.
According to Telecom, the disruptions are linked to a combination of network infrastructure challenges and system-related issues within the fixed broadband and mobile environment.
“Our technical teams remain fully mobilised and are working around the clock to restore affected services and strengthen overall network resilience,” Telecom stated.
Telecom added that it recognises the critical role reliable connectivity plays in Namibia’s socio-economic development and digital transformation.
The company, therefore, takes the current service challenges seriously and is accelerating a series of targeted interventions, including network stabilisation and optimisation initiatives; ongoing infrastructure upgrades and modernisation programmes; improved monitoring and rapid response capabilities; and enhanced communication to customers and stakeholders.
Telecom Namibia further acknowledged that service performance has not consistently met expected standards.
The organisation stated that it is committed to restoring service reliability and rebuilding customer confidence through measurable improvements and greater transparency.
Meanwhile, CRAN is, however, concerned about the impact that the service interruptions are having on consumers, businesses, and institutions that rely on stable and reliable connectivity for daily operations and communication.
“The level of disruptions is also affecting the viability of Telecom Namibia as a telecommunications service licensee and its ability to meet licence conditions and minimum quality of service parameters,” read a CRAN statement.
In response to the matter, CRAN recently formally summoned Telecom to an urgent and comprehensive briefing on the cause of the disruptions, the interventions currently underway, and measures being implemented to ensure service stability and prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
Emilia Nghikembua, CRAN CEO, stated, “Reliable connectivity remains critical to Namibia’s socio-economic development and digital transformation agenda. CRAN expects all licensed operators to maintain service quality standards and to ensure that consumers are kept informed during service disruptions. We are engaging Telecom Namibia to better understand the cause of the current challenges and the measures being implemented to restore and stabilise services”.
“The Authority will also assess the overall viability of Telecom Namibia’s business case in light of the continued network instability and compliance with other licence conditions. This assessment will focus on whether Telecom Namibia is able to meet its licence obligations and uphold customer service and quality assurance standards,” Nghikembua concluded.
CRAN further reiterated the importance of maintaining resilient communications networks and ensuring timely, transparent, and consistent communication with consumers during service interruptions.
CRAN will continue to monitor the situation closely and engage with Telecom Namibia as restoration efforts progress.
