Windhoek

The premiere of the Namibian-produced film ‘The Unseen’ is to take place on Wednesday at the Alte Feste, the old military fort in Windhoek’s city centre. The Unseen is a collection of philosophical musings on what it means to be alive in an independent Namibia.
The screening will be opened by Bience Gawanas, the special adviser to the minister of poverty eradication and social welfare and the former AU commissioner for social affairs. After the screening there will be an open discussion with director Perivi Katjavivi and his crew and cast. Hans-Christian Mahnke, director of AfricAvenir Windhoek, states: “The Unseen is a cinematic Namibian love letter to Fanon, and also a love letter to Namibia and its ongoing decolonization project. Namibia must be very proud of this film and its filmmaker, Perivi Katjavivi. We are very excited to play our part in decolonizing the inner city of Windhoek with this screening.”
Unfolding more like a conversation than a narrative, The Unseen follows the story of three wandering souls as they navigate the emotional and physical realities of post-colonial Namibia.  First is Marcus (played by Antonia David Lyons, known for his roles in Hotel Rwanda, Scandal, 24, American History X), an African American actor tasked with portraying one of Namibia’s historical leaders. Seeking authenticity in his craft, he embarks on an earnest research mission to unveil the true history of his character.
Then there is Anu (played by Mathew Ishitile), a talented local musician who is having trouble negotiating between his influences and identity.
Lastly, there is Sara (played by Senga Brockerhoff), a depressed young woman uncertain of whether or not her environment provides anything worth living for. So far the film has screened at the Pan African Film Festival, Los Angeles (world premiere), African Perspectives, AfricAvenir, Oshakati (African premiere), Luxor African Film Festival, Luxor, Egypt, Durban International Film Festival (official competition) and is also one of the lined up films at the upcoming International Pan African Film Festival of Cannes.
The film is brought to the public by AfricAvenir Windhoek, in partnership with Old Location Films. The screening will take place at 19h00. Entrance: pre-sales N$80, at the door N$100. Tickets are available at Events Today (online), Warehouse Theatre, Biltong Shop Maerua Mall.
