Star of the week: President Hage Geingob

Home Special Focus Star of the week: President Hage Geingob

Our star of the week is President Hage Geingob,  who earlier this month appointed a Cabinet Committee on Water Supply Security that also comprises of the Technical Committee of Experts to address the country’s acute water shortage. Namibia faces an ecological crisis, with three central dams that supply Windhoek and Okahandja reportedly being nearly depleted and currently hold only 11.1 percent of their capacity (Swakoppoort – 10 percent, Von Bach Dam – 20.5 percent  and Omatako Dam – 2.3 percent). Goreangab Dam is 97.5 percent full, but due to excessive pollution the water is now utterly unfit for human consumption. Windhoek needs an estimated 33 million cubic metres (Mm3) of water a year, but faces a deficit of 15.7 Mm3.
