Children in Wards 9, 10 and 15 at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital were proud recipients of toiletry packs this week, while those at Medipark Hospital received nappies, colouring books and pencils to keep them busy.
FNB Namibia on Monday donated toiletries worth N$6 500 to paediatric patients at Medipark Private Hospital in Ongwediva, as well as Oshakati Intermediate Hospital. The donation was made in honour of the celebration of Mandela Day, celebrated annually on July 18.
FNB’s area business manager for the Far North, Tomas Indji, described Mandela Day as a day to give back to the less privileged without expecting anything in return. “Mandela Day is a day to give back, to serve, to make a difference. The aim is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in doing so build a global movement for good,” stated Indji.
Receiving the donation at Medipark paediatrician Togara Pamachete noted that supporting children is vital to making them responsible and better adults in future.
Medical Superintendent at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital Josephine Augustinus said the spirit of giving should be a sustained practise and not only on Mandela Day. “The hospital is for all of us. It’s high time we plough back in order to assist government,” said Augustinus.
She also appealed to the young generation to pursue careers in the medical field in order to assist the country to mitigate the shortage of medical staff. At present, the referral hospital, with its bed capacity of 731 beds, attends to some 800 patients daily.
Augustinus noted that the hospital has a shortage of doctors and medical staff. She said there are plans to upgrade the hospital from a four-theatre facility to 15 theatre rooms.
