A 52-year-old Namibian of Dutch origin was shot dead on Tuesday near Grootfontein.
The incident happened at around 17h30, confirmed Warrant-Officer Maureen Mbeha of the Namibian Police’s public relations division for Otjozondjupa Region.
Mbeha said the incident happened 7 km out of Grootfontein on plot Felsen Qulle. The victim was identified as Pieter Jacob.
Jacob allegedly drove to the bank earlier in the day, as he wanted to deposit money. He worked at Bakers Namibia as a sales representative for the northern regions. He was late and as a result he did not deposit the money, so he went back to the plot.
He took two of his employees to Grootfontein after dropping off the money at the plot but when he returned he was allegedly shot in front of the plot.
A man was apprehended for questioning yesterday, Mbeha said.
The deceased’s mother who is 78 years old allegedly heard the gunshot and she activated the alarm. She allegedly saw four young men on the scene, Mbeha added.
The police found Jacob fighting for his life but they could not resuscitate him and he died on the way to hospital, said the police spokesperson.
The mother was taken to Grootfonten and treated for shock. She overnighted with her pastor at an old age home, and has since been discharged from hospital.
Mbeha warned the public not to keep large amounts of money at home “as you cannot be sure who is monitoring you”.
