Last Saturday saw action in the tennis league continue at the different club venues, namely at the DTS, SKW and Central Tennis Club (CTC).

Tough encounters were the order of the day when Nampol squared off against CTC and SKW 1 took on DTS in the first league. CTC-B battled it out against CTC Poly and SKW strung it out against CTC-C in the men’s second league.

In the women’s league the ladies of DTS played against their CTC-B counterparts. The ladies’ encounter turned out to be very successful as DTS defeated CTC-B by 16 to 4 points. DTS‘s Kerstin Gressmann overpowered Mary-Beth Gallagher of CTC-B 6-0 6-1. Sasha Rau from DTS won against Joyce Stalls 6-4, 6-4.

In the doubles matches, Ushi Ahrens and Birgit Hacker from DTS struggled to a tiebreaker against Lena Brinkmann and Sabine Hancock but scraped through for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 victory. Gressmann teamed up with Rau and won against Brinkmann and Hancock, 6-1 6-0. The tables were turned when Ahrens and Hancock lost to Stalls and Gallagher, 2-6 4-6.

In the second men’s league, CTC Poly proved themselves the mightier ones, collecting 16 points to 4 points against CTC-B. Ronaldo Uirab, a junior from CTC-B gave CTC Poly’s Prince Loemba a hard time on his way to a 6-2 6-0 win.

Lawrence Kahindi from CTC-B lost to Poly’s Colin Nyandoro 3-6 4-6. Kyalo Kitheka and Tafadzwa Chakare of CTC-B lost to the Poly double of Socrates Muyambo and Robert Riethmueller 6-7 4-6. In another encounter Uirab and Kahindi played through to a tiebreak but lost to Muyambo and Riethmueller, 3-6 7-5 7-10.

The last doubles match saw CTC’s Kitheka and Chakare stumble against Loemba and Nyandoro who won 3-6 4-6.

The highlight of the weekend was certainly the much-anticipated clash between the first league teams CTC and guest team Nampol. In a very tight singles match lasting more than three hours Minichel Alemu of CTC lost to Nampol’s Grant Rau, 6-4 6-7 5-7.
