Outgoing Spanish Ambassador to Namibia Carmen Diaz Orejas says there is further interest among Spanish business persons to invest in Namibia. The Spanish already have investments in Namibia’s fishing sector.

Apart from the fishing sector, she said, sectors in which her countrymen are also interested are infrastructure, oil and energy.

Speaking during a farewell courtesy call to President Hage Geingob at State House yesterday, Orejas said Spain and Namibia signed a cooperation agreement in 1995 that will expire this year.

“We signed an agreement way back in 1995 while other agreements dated back to 1990. During the past years Spain and Namibia have been working together in many different sectors,” the ambassador briefed the president.

She said she was very pleased with projects initiated in Namibia by the Spanish embassy.

“I had the opportunity to travel around the country to visit some of these joint projects. It was very rewarding to see what Spanish and Namibian citizens have been doing together to promote small and medium enterprises. We have been working together in education, training, fisheries, water, sanitation and gender equality. To me it was good not only as an ambassador but as a woman to support these key sectors in which I was very supportive towards Namibian women,” she enthused.

On the cultural level, she said Spain is supporting the University of Namibia to provide Spanish lessons to students interested in learning Spanish.

“I’m very proud to say that Spanish is growing in the world with 550 million people speaking it. We are working closely with the University of Namibia to introduce Spanish as a language as there is a growing interest to learn Spanish and the embassy has tried to provide this possibility,” further stated Orejas.
